Shoring Solutions

ShoringMatthews Wall Anchor is a leader in the shoring of new and existing retaining walls. Plate anchors are designed to stabilize cracking and bowed foundation walls. The inside wall plate is fabricated from 10 gauge hot-rolled steel and measures 12” X 26”. The wall plate has two embossed reinforcing ribs for additional stiffness, plus a 4” square, 10-gauge square washer is included for added strength.

Plate Anchor Solutions

The plate anchor is fabricated from two 10-gauge plates and has four reinforcing ribs and four cleats providing approximately 430 square inches of soil bearing surface. The wall plate and plate anchor are connected by a 3/4” diameter continuously threaded tie rod and secured with nuts. The plate anchor assembly is hot-dipped galvanized for protection against corrosion. The plate anchors are the most economical method for providing supplemental lateral force to help stabilize bowed and cracked walls. This installation can be quickly installed using handheld equipment and requires minimal excavation or disturbance to the surrounding area.

Soil Nailing

Soil NailingWhen commercial businesses or homeowners are in need of a secure retaining wall, soil nailing is the solution and Matthews Wall Anchors has the best tools from Earth Contact Products (ECP). Soil nailing has been used for many years for a variety of repair jobs. It can be a permanent or temporary solution for multiple uses. Soil nails are used to support and stabilize the soil for plants, tunnels, buildings, and retaining walls.

ECP soil nails consist of a 1-1/2 inch or 1-3/4 inch shaft which is welded along the entire length of the soil nail. They are generally between five and seven feet long, but other lengths can be specially fabricated based on the job. There are a few points that must be considered to determine if soil nail installation would be the effective solution to the stability problem.

  • Examine ground conditions
  • Discuss the pros and cons of soil nailing in the particular area and situation
  • Other options if soil nailing is ruled out
  • Cost

Soil nails can be inserted into a variety of soil types and conditions, but ideally, the soil should be able to stand unsupported for a day or two when vertically cut. All soil nails should be located above the groundwater table, if not the groundwater will negatively affect the excavation site and the bond between the soil and the nail will be broken. If all conditions are favorable for the soil nail(s) to be inserted, the product will provide strong, reliable stability for many years.

The installation process is relatively simple. Holes are drilled into the ground at an angle, then steel bars are placed into the holes for stability. Next, a drainage system is installed with recast face panels or concrete facing. Finally, the soil is removed 3 to 6 feet from the ground. These steps are repeated until the desired wall depth is accomplished.

Soil nails offer many benefits:

  • Used in confined areas
  • Repairs retaining walls
  • Installed beneath existing structures next to excavations
  • Stabilizes landslides and slopes
  • Quick and easy installation
  • Cost-effective
  • Used for buildings, garages, and sheds

Permanent Shoring Solutions

Matthews Wall Anchor is a leader in permanent shoring solutions for new and existing retaining walls. Our anchoring system is designed to support shoring walls greater than 15 ft. in height. Our helical tieback anchors are manufactured by Earth Contact Products (ECP), the very best in the industry.

Our helical tieback anchors are perfect for permanent shoring in limited access areas or areas where large excavations, cleanup, and vibrations are a concern. They require smaller equipment, fewer crew members, and less time than other shoring methods. We install them using a hydraulic drill on readily available construction equipment. The load capacity is calculated during installation based on the amount of torque applied to the anchor.

There are many benefits to using our helical tieback anchors for permanent shoring. These benefits include:

  • No excavation
  • Installs in any weather
  • No cure time – immediate proof test and load
  • Installs with readily available equipment
  • Reduced labor and equipment costs
  • Maximizes flexibility with changing soil conditions
